This is penpal service aimed at linking a member of the community to a person who has recently been in a state of homelessness.
This is not a charity, business or organisation. This is an opportunity to reduce the experiences of social isolation for people who have recently been homeless. A PO Box is used as a central exchange as to protect the privacy of all penpals.
Letters foster an opportunity for supportive contact and exposure to positve role modelling and mentoring. For a person who has experienced homelessness, a letter may provide a positive human interaction, a sense of meaning and purpose and a powerful connection to the outside world.
The small gesture of a letter can create a big difference in a person's life.
Social Isolation
Social isolation is a common experience for many people in a state of homelessmness.
While relationship breakdowns, mental illness, and alcohol and other drug misuse are often attributed as possible causes of homelessness, it is often the deficit in social support and resources that create greater impairment for the individuals concerned.
People who have found themselves in a state of homelessness describe feelings of helplessness, isolation, and loneliness. As social support diminishes and opportunities to engage in work -which also affords social interaction- become difficult, the experience of homelessness can have devestating effects on people and the broader community.
